Common Pine Board
Common Pine Board
Oil on Copper
12 x 12 inches
2021

There is no wood in this painting. Everything, including the wood grain, pencil lines, saw dust, and dirt, is painted with oil paint.

On construction sites, wood is found in abundance. It is mainly used to build the temporary flooring or “deck” for concrete structures, like high-rise buildings and bridges. The wooden floor acts as a recording device, accumulating thousands of bootprints, smudges, and other markings. The indexical information that accumulates on the surface of the wood not only records the acts of labor but generates pareidolic shapes that can resemble contemporary abstract paintings and other art forms. Wood grain tends to mimic figures or faces; I usually visualize northern provincial Italian Renaissance paintings from the fourteenth century.
